Stiles likes to buy his mom balloons for her birthday. This year, he finds himself with a little more cash and a little more weight on his heart—so he buys a few more than usual. With every balloon he releases, he tries to think of something important to say.
"I got Dad to slow down on the drinking."
"Scott’s stopped being Allison’s puppy. Well, he’s not as much."
"I passed my chem final."
"I think I like a guy," he eventually blurts out, and this is the closest he’s come to coming out (well, apart from with Danny—"Am I attractive to gay guys?"). He sighs. "Yeah. Derek Hale. You remember him, ma? I… yeah," he finishes lamely before letting go of the balloon.
He watches the balloon float away, and takes the breeze that swirls around him as a sign of his mother’s acceptance (because if there’s anyone whose acceptance he needs, it’s hers).
